Driggs, ID - (06/01/2006) - In the past year, over 300 of the Valley's schoolchildren have participated in monitoring their local rivers and streams, learning about our native species and restoring trout habitat.
In a year long stream study effort sponsored by Friends of the Teton River, the Teton Community School led a hands-on investigation into their local watershed. Through monthly trips to area streams, these students learned the importance of healthy water and trout habitat to the livelihood of Teton Valley. In the fall these students were able to put what they learned into action by helping restore an important Yellowstone cutthroat trout spawning and rearing tributary on Unnamed Creek.
Students responded to an essay question about "Where the Trout Live Well" as part of the Teton Trout 2006 event. The winning entries are published here and demonstrate the remarkable sense of place, connection, and stewardship for Teton Valley natural resources that our children possess at such a young age.
Teton Trout 2006 is a celebration of fly-fishing, fine art and heathly trout habitat. This project is sponsored by Friends of the Teton River, Teton Arts Council, and the Teton Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Two judges for the essay contest, besides Susan Carr, were Don Struebel of the FTR board and Loa Gaylord, Teton Middle School science teacher.
